The Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MoCT), together with consultants from United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), has started the process of grading and accrediting 200 hotels in Addis Ababa and 400 hotels in the rest of the country. The Ministry consulted with stakeholders including the Ethiopian Hotel Association, hotel owners, and Hotel and Tourism Institutions before preparing the grading system, and it signed a consultancy agreement with UNWTO) last month. The project, financed by the World Bank, is being carried out by none members of UNWTO and thirty Ethiopian experts and will be finalized by September this year. Hotels will be evaluated under twelve categories including fulfillment of all legal requirements for health, safety and security, fire and the environment, and grading will be based on the score achieved. A hotel will be required to achieve more than 80% to be awarded five stars.
