The Maka Al-Mukarramah Hotel in Mogadishu was targeted by an Al-Shabaab terrorist suicide attack on Friday (March 27). The attack started around 4 p.m. Friday when a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden car at the gate of the hotel and six terrorists then stormed the hotel, killing 18 people including Somalia’s Ambassador to Switzerland and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ambassador Yusuf Bari-Bari. At least 28 people were also wounded. Security forces subsequently took control of the hotel, killing all six attackers. Ambassador Maman Sidikou, Special Representative of the African Union to Somalia and head of AMISOM, condemned the attack: “Our message to the perpetrators of this inhuman act is, that their action will not dampen our spirit for the common good of Somalia, but will further strengthen us to work even harder to defeat the enemy of peace and development, with the aim of rebuilding a stronger and stable Somalia.” IGAD also condemned this cowardly act of terror in the strongest terms possible. A statement issued by IGAD’s Executive Secretary, Mahboub Maalim, said “IGAD will work with the Government and the people of Somalia who will continue to rebuild their homeland. The swift action of the Somali forces demonstrates the capability of the Somali forces.” He said IGAD extended its deepest condolences to the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Somalia, families and loved ones of the victims of this senseless attack. The UN Security Council also strongly condemned the attack saying that “neither this, nor any other senseless act of terrorism in Somalia, would dent their resolve to support the peace and reconciliation process in Somalia.” In a press statement the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constituted one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism were criminal and unjustifiable regardless of their motivation, wherever and whenever and by whomsoever committed.
