The opening ceremony of the Oromo Diaspora Festival celebrated at the AU Headquarters on Monday, (August 03, 2015). The festival, the first of its kind gathered many of the members of the Oromo Diaspora. The event was attended by H.E Hailemariam Dessalegne, Prime minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, H.E Abadula Gemeda, the Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, H.E Muktar Kedir, President of Oromia Regional State, Aster Mamo, Minister of the Civil Service, Ambassadors and many dignitaries. Prime Minster Hailemariam Dessalegne expressed his gratitude for the members of the Oromo Diaspora for their presence and keen interest to take part in the event to bring a holistic change in the development process of their country. The Prime Minster said the first national celebration of the Diaspora festival aimed to bring together the Diaspora community to participate in the overall development process of the country. Active engagement of the Diaspora, he said will have an immense benefit for Ethiopia’s path of renaissance. He noted Ethiopia has achieved highest economic growth for the consecutive twelve years, adding that this is backed by the Diasporas’ contribution in terms of knowledge, skill and leadership. He further added that the Diaspora should play a pivotal role in the investment sectors like the flora industry, livestock and fisheries by taking into consideration the favorable condition of the Oromia region for modern agriculture. The booming manufacturing and construction sector is also a good opportunity to invest, he said. In addition to this, he also called the Diaspora to take part in research and development in Universities and also to promote Oromo culture and history. The Prime Minster thus called upon the members of the Oromo Diaspora to have a proactive participation in Ethiopia’s development efforts and contribute towards measurable achievements.
